PAGE 16www.winnslavin.comQ: With the nearly one hundred pieces that were displayed, can you highlight a few standouts and explain their significance?A: Much of Dal%u00ed%u2019s body of etchings for Argillet were done as suites of particular subjects. For example, the Mythology Suite, perhaps the most popular, was a series of 16 etchings exploring various characters in Greek mythology such as Pegasus, Argus, Icarus and Medusa. The Surrealistic Bullfight suite is another popular series of 7 etchings that were based, in part, on a series of images produced by Pablo Picasso. Dal%u00ed and Picasso, both Spaniards, were polar opposites in their views of bullfighting. Picasso adored it, lauding it as a significant part of Spanish culture, while Dal%u00ed found it brutal and deserving of ridicule. Without Picasso%u2019s permission, Dal%u00ed based his Surrealistic Bullfight series on Picasso%u2019s work but changed the central figures. In %u201cBurning Giraffe,%u201d Dal%u00ed put a giraffe where Picasso had a bull. In %u201cThe Parrots,%u201d Dal%u00ed changed Picasso%u2019s human toreadors to parrots. In 2017, Winn Slavin Fine Art was the first gallery to offer entire matched number suites, so they featured prominently in this year%u2019s exhibition. Our curation also included two hand-colored, full-size concept sketches Dal%u00ed painted in preparation for the etching editions and a rare tapestry based on the %u201cSurrealistic Bullfight: The Mills%u201d etching. We also presented an artist%u2019s proof of a very rare Dal%u00ed sculpture, %u201cVictoire de Samothrace.%u201d52 MOST MAGAZINE - ISSUE 50
