Q: What initially drew you to photography and inspired you to pursue it professionally?A: I%u2019ve had a passion for photography since I was six years old. I vividly remember spending hours in the darkroom with my grandpa, the gentle glow of the red light casting a warm hue over the developing images. There was something magical about watching the photo come to life in the developing tray. My grandpa%u2019s instructions, %u201cdon%u2019t turn the light on,%u201d and the silent anticipation as the image emerged left a lasting impression on me. That early experience in the darkroom sparked a fascination with the art of capturing moments and transforming them into visual stories.Q: Can you describe your journey to achieving the titles of Master Photographer and Master Artist?A: Achieving the titles of Master Photographer and Master Artist through the Professional Photographers of America (PPA) was an exciting and challenging journey. PPA offers these prestigious degrees to recognize the significant achievements of its members. When I decided to pursue these degrees, I set a goal to attain both simultaneously. Despite the rigorous process, I was determined and managed to complete them in three IPC (International Print Competition) years, which was incredibly rewarding.Having a BFA from Kutztown University provided me with a solid foundation in the arts, but I wanted to push myself further as an adult. Pursuing these degrees was a way to challenge myself and grow professionally. The process involved submitting my work for judging, earning merits through various educational and service activities, and continually refining my skills. The dedication and hard work paid off, and achieving these titles has been a significant milestone in my career, affirming my commitment to excellence in photography and artistry.Q: What are some of the most memorable projects you%u2019ve worked on throughout your career?A: Some of the most memorable projects I%u2019ve worked on have involved photographing animals, which has always been a passion of mine. One of my favorite experiences was at my local zoo, where I had the incredible opportunity to set up studio lights and bring animals into a room for a photoshoot. This unique setup allowed me to capture intimate and stunning portraits of various animals. One particularly fun moment was playing fetch with a fennec fox. It was such a playful and energetic little creature. Another unforgettable experience was photographing a penguin. He waddled into the room with such confidence, almost like he was ready to say, %u201cready for my close-up!%u201dAdditionally, I visited a farm in Ohio that had a large lair with seven foxes. I had the chance to go inside the lair and photograph one of them while the owner controlled it with food. It was an exhilarating experience, especially when another fox wrapped its soft fur around my ankles. The farm also had flying squirrels, which, to be honest, terrified me a bit. Despite that, each of these projects has provided me with unique and unforgettable moments that have enriched my career and fueled my passion for animal photography.Exclusive Interview16 MOST MAGAZINE - ISSUE 48
