Q: Can you share the story behind one of your favorite photographs or art pieces?A: One of my favorite pieces is titled %u201cProtected.%u201d It features an orangutan and her baby and holds a special place in my heart. I captured this moment at Zoo Atlanta on a perfect zoo day, with partial overcast skies and temperatures in the 60s. As I rounded the corner of the exhibit, I saw them sitting there, gazing directly at me.The expression in their eyes was a mix of fear and a silent warning to not come any closer. This poignant moment deeply moved me, as it highlighted the vulnerability of these magnificent creatures. Orangutans are becoming extremely at risk for extinction, and this photograph encapsulates the fragile bond between mother and child amidst their uncertain future. The image inspired me to create a digital painting, where I enhanced the mood and emotion of that encounter. %u201cProtected%u201d serves as a powerful reminder of the urgent need to protect and preserve these incredible animals. It%u2019s a piece that not only showcases the beauty of the orangutans but also raises awareness about their plight and the importance of conservation efforts.Q: What role does post-processing play in your photography, and how do you approach it?A: Post-processing plays a pivotal role in my photography; it%u2019s actually my favorite part of the entire process. When I photograph an animal, I%u2019m already envisioning the steps I will take during editing to transform the image into a final piece of art. In my head, I%u2019m mapping out the enhancements, adjustments, and creative touches that will bring out the essence of the subject and convey the intended emotion or story.My approach to post-processing is meticulous and thoughtful. I start by assessing the raw photograph and identifying its potential. I then proceed with a series of edits, which might include adjusting the lighting, enhancing colors, and adding textures to create depth and dimension. I often use digital painting techniques to add illustrative elements, ensuring each piece is unique and visually compelling. Throughout the editing process, I always consider how the final piece will be received. My goal is to create images that not only capture the beauty of the animals but also evoke a strong emotional response from the viewer. By investing time and creativity into post-processing, I can elevate a simple photograph into a stunning work of art that tells a powerful story.Q: How do you stay inspired and motivated in a field that is constantly evolving?A: Staying inspired and motivated comes naturally to me because of my deep love for animals and my commitment to their future. My passion for capturing their beauty and raising awareness about their plight is a constant source of inspiration. Every time I photograph an animal, I am reminded of the unique stories and personalities each one possesses, which drives me to create meaningful and impactful art.The ever-evolving nature of photography and digital art also excites me. I embrace new techniques and technologies, such as AI and advanced editing software, as opportunities to expand my creative horizons. Given my extensive experience with Photoshop since 1993, I incorporate many old-school techniques that seasoned users will appreciate. At the same time, I also embrace cutting-edge advancements in the field, including AI tools in Photoshop like Adobe Firefly. This mix of traditional and modern techniques offers a comprehensive learning experience that caters to a wide range of interests and skill sets. While beginners might find some concepts challenging, my teaching style is clear and easy to follow. I focus on breaking down complex techniques into manageable steps, making them accessible and understandable.
