MOST MAGAZINE - ISSUE 78 61MOSTMAGAZINEThe Visionary Behind the Lenswww.danielperrystudios.comIG: @danielperrystudios CAN YOU SHARE THE STORY BEHIND THIS PHOTOGRAPH OF ANDY WARHOL? WHERE AND WHEN WAS IT TAKEN, AND WHAT WAS THE ATMOSPHERE LIKE DURING THE SHOOT? I was commissioned to shoot the 25th anniversary of Andy%u2019s first one-man show in Philadelphia. The event was held at the Four Seasons Hotel. The guests posed with him and he handed out signed Interview Magazines. He and the surviving members of the Silver Factory were in attendance for a cocktail party and dinner. ANDY WARHOL HAD SUCH AN ICONIC PERSONAL STYLE. HOW DID YOU APPROACH CAPTURING HIS ESSENCE IN THIS PARTICULAR PHOTO? I put on my auto-pilot and shoot as many well-composed pictures as time permits and try to capture as many different expressions. It is up to the viewer much later to interpret what I captured. WAS THERE A SPECIFIC MOMENT OR INTERACTION DURING THE SHOOT THAT STANDS OUT AS ESPECIALLY MEMORABLE OR REVEALING ABOUT WARHOL%u2019S PERSONALITY? I Yes, Andy was sequestered in a separate room, with his photo silk screens of Princess Grace behind him. Interestingly, she was dubbed the patron saint of Philadelphia, her birthplace.A group of paparazzi swarmed around him. They all took the same shot and promptly left the room, leaving me alone with him. I took a few shots, and neither of us spoke. As I searched for another angle, I looked back at him and saw him mouthing some words, but no sound came out.I%u2019m not a lip reader, but he seemed to be saying, %u201cI love you, and I want you.%u201dLater, after reading his Philosophy book, I discovered that he was going through his Man Who Fell to Earth period at the time. So, my deduction? The weirder, the better.
