68 MOST MAGAZINE - ISSUE 73MOSTMAGAZINEInterviewExclusive YOUR SUPER STUDIO IN VANCOUVER IS DESCRIBED AS A CREATIVE POWERHOUSE. HOW DID YOU ENVISION THE SPACE WHEN YOU FIRST STARTED, AND HOW HAS IT EVOLVED OVER THE PAST DECADE?It began simply as a warehouse space with triple-high ceilings, shaped like a shoebox. The only thing I had in mind at the start was a large doorway that felt like a portal into some magical reality. So, I built that first and called it KingsGate. I remember bringing in three of my favorite models that first week. I had piles of lumber scattered in three locations, and I pointed to them, saying, %u201cThis will be Paris, this will be a magical doorway, and this will be the Throne of Rome!%u201d They looked at me like, %u201cJulian, are you taking your medications?%u201d And from there%u2026 it just kept growing, evolving, and surprising me%u2014like it has a life of its own! WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO ESTABLISH YOUR CAREER IN FASHION AND FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY, AND WHAT CONTINUES TO DRIVE YOUR PASSION TODAY?Since I started by shooting for modeling agencies, I had to shoot %u201cfashion.%u201d It didn%u2019t take long for me to realize I wasn%u2019t particularly interested in fashion per se%u2014but the models were beautiful, and I began to see myself as a beauty photographer rather than a fashion photographer. I%u2019m easily inspired: a pair of earrings, a shipment of lingerie, a new face, someone I meet at a cocktail party, a new collection, or even an idea for a new studio set. THE WILDEVISION COLLECTIONS ARE A CORNERSTONE OF YOUR ARTISTRY. CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE CONCEPT BEHIND THESE 30 ONE-HOUR VIDEOS AND WHAT MAKES THEM SO UNIQUE?With the Collections, I blend the genres that come most naturally to me%u2014portraiture, fashion, advertising, fine art, glamour, interiors, photography, and cin%u00e9ma v%u00e9rit%u00e9. The goal is to weave these elements together so that it never feels like you%u2019re just watching %u201cportraits%u201d or %u201cads%u201d for an hour. That would be excruciating! Instead, we use a calculated approach that keeps the experience immersive, interesting, and cohesive. All the images are horizontal, %u201cenvelope style,%u201d which enhances the immersive experience%u2014like having a gallery of your favorite images in your home, displayed in high resolution on a widescreen TV. We%u2019ve also introduced titles like Dolce Vita and NightVision while expanding popular series such as The City of Women and WildeBeauty. Now, with 37 Collections, you can binge-watch WildeVision for days!YOU%u2019RE KNOWN FOR BEING A SELF-DRIVEN ARTIST RATHER THAN A PHOTOGRAPHER FOR HIRE. HOW DOES THIS APPROACH SHAPE YOUR CREATIVE PROJECTS AND YOUR CONNECTION WITH YOUR AUDIENCE?I For the last 10 years, I%u2019ve followed a philosophy similar to Field of Dreams: %u201cBuild it, and they will come.%u201d My creative process starts with a vision of what I want to see, and I build upon that, letting it evolve naturally. While I consider what my audience enjoys, it doesn%u2019t dictate my direction.
