84 || CELEBRITY MAGAZINE || MAY-JUNE 2017of it with a local TV/Film agent. During my senior year, when my friends were applying for colleges, I realized that if acting was what I really wanted to do and that the traditional route of academia might not be for me.Landing your first professional role in HBO%u2019s The Leftovers, you played missing girl Taylor Truitt. How did you learn about the part and what was the process leading up to and landing the role? What were some of the reactions from friends and family? For how creative Austin is, there are a surprisingly low amount of productions filming there so when a show from HBO comes to town, everyone is aware. I got an audition with one of the local casting agents for the role, and went in. I honestly felt like it was one of the worst auditions I%u2019d ever done, and never expected to hear anything back. So when I did the next day, I was very excited! My family has always been extremely supportive and were very happy for me.Comic Book shows/films have taken the industry by storm. With the recent successful films showcasing strong female leads such as Scarlett Johansson%u2019s Black Widow and Margot Robbie%u2019s Harley Quinn, can you imagine a time where the gender gap will no longer be a factor? I can totally imagine that day, and I know we%u2019re taking steps towards closing the gap between gender, race, and sexual orientation, but there is always more we can do. For Hollywood, a huge step is to not only represent our diversity onscreen, but also off. I have loved working with the few female directors I have, and want to encourage it more! I%u2019ve never worked with a female camera-op, how is that possible!? We need to work together to represent everyone across the board.
